Byron Bay is an easy 35 minute drive from The Run.

In 1770, Captain James Cook named Cape Byron after his navigator,
grandfather of the future poet, Lord Byron.
European settlement occured in the 1880's, when the
streets were named after other English writers and philosophers.
Cedar - getting
This was the first big industry
as it was at the Run. Remnant Cedars can still be found on
The Run.
Coopers Shoot and Skinners Shoot were named as the place where the logs would be shot down the hills,
later to be dragged to load on ships.
In 1984 the Railway came to Byron Bay.
In 1886 the first Jetty was built.
Dairying
The develoment of the dairy industry followed on the cleared land ( as it did at The Run)
In 1895 the first Norco Cooperative was formed.
James Armstrong, the selector and first owner of
The Run at Rosebank was
the first Chairman of the Provisional Board which started this Butter Factory at Byron Bay.
This Byron factory, became the biggest in the Southern hemisphere, it exported butter to the world.
Poor Working Town
Byron was always a poor working town, dairy, meat works, whale slaughter
in the 1950's and 1960's and before and shortly after the war , sandmining decimated the environment.
All of these industries gradually waned and all the factories closed.
Surfing and Tourism.
The place was discovered by Surfers particularly the breaks at The Pass, Wategoes and Tallow Beach.
The Longboarders arrived around the 1960's to begin the transformation towards today's tourist mecca.
The Cape Byron Lighthouse is Australia's most easterly light, it is also Australia's most powerful Lighthouse.
It was constructed in 1901.
The original concentric six wick burner was 145,000 cd. This was replaced in 1922 by a vapourised kerosene mantle burner which gave an illumination of 500,000 cd.
In 1956, the light was converted to mains electricity and became Australia's most powerful, at 2,200,00 cd.

The Byron Bay Golf Club is a challenging 18 hole championship
course.
Set out on 120 acres of coastal habitat, the course is
beautifully landscaped with ocean views from several holes.
